SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE: “Blinded-By-The-Light”

23 May

The long Memorial Day Weekend will soon be upon us. This is the weekend that traditionally heralds the start of summer; a season of “fun in the sun.” With that spirit in mind, I would suggest the following Sanchin Pilgrimage to all my Sect Of Sanchin members. This method of Sanchin practice is a favorite of mine; in fact, it IS my daily morning Sanchin practice.

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

For purposes of ascribing a name to this Sanchin Pilgrimage, I will utilize the title of a popular song from my youth; I call this Sanchin pilgrimage the

“Blinded-By-The-Light Sanchin Pilgrimage.”

Sunrise, Veteran’s Oasis Lake, Chandler, Arizona

Session Parameters:

Date: So as to celebrate the start of summer, perform Sanchin any time during the long Memorial Day weekend being mindful of the salient points below.

Location:  Any location; however, I would suggest a natural, outdoor location that best represents the concept of “summer” to you; perhaps the sea shore, the mountains, a lake, even your own backyard while waiting for your grill to heat-up for the first BBQ of summer, be creative and celebrate your individual concept of summer.

Salient Points:

  • The purpose of this pilgrimage is to accentuate the manner in which Sanchin physically and spiritually interconnects you with your external environment. As such, you should be conscious of this interconnectivity;
  • Face the sun (but do not look directly at the sun). Then close your eyes;
  • With eyes closed, perform the “Acts of preparation” (bow, meditation and ready posture); you should be aware of the warmth of the sun upon your face and body;
  • With eyes still closed, perform Sanchin; be aware of all the various external elements, including, though not limited to the warmth of the sun, the breeze, the smell and sounds of your surrounding, take all of these factors within you as you perform Sanchin. Use all your senses;
  • After completing Sanchin and while in the ready posture, open your eyes and reflect upon the sensory stimuli experienced during Sanchin; also, note your position after performing Sanchin in relation to the position you were in prior to starting Sanchin; are you still in alignment with that position, or are you out of alignment? (See Endnote # 1)
  • Perform the “Acts of conclusion” (ready posture, meditation and bow);
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

In closing I remain, eager to be “blinded by the light” each and every morning,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

ENDNOTES:

1. Goshin-Do Karate Sanchin, like all “modern” kata (generally kata established or modified from the ancient kata after 1940) have a unique characteristic known as “positional coincidence.” Positional coincidence means that if a kata is performed with technical accuracy, particularly as to the stances utilized in the kata, one would start and conclude a kata at exactly the same point on the ground and in alignment with the overall starting position. Prior to approximately 1940, the older versions of kata did not necessarily have the characteristic of positional coincidence. While the majority of “modern” karate kata contain the concept, the lack of positional coincidence may still be seen in the older kata of Okinawa Kobudo (ancient weapons art) and kata of Chinese Kung-Fu.

2012 – THE YEAR OF THE WHITE BELT

1 Jan

2012, Shougatsu, Shiroi No Obi – New Year (of the) White Belt

I suggest that in the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and months, that begin to unfold into the path that will be called “2012”, we need to walk that unwinding path with the “mind of a white belt.”

This concept is derived from a Goshin-Do Karate percept, “Observe with the mind of a white belt.” The while belt, worn by novice students, is said to symbolize purity and innocence in terms of preconceptions as to Karate. (See Endnote # 1). When a Karate-Ka (student of Karate) first enters the Dojo, the neophyte observes without preconceived thought or emotion. Thus, one observes every detail, even the most minute, with the pure eyes of a child. In doing so, one is able to capture the inner most aspect of a Karate-Do technique and incorporate it into one’s personal repertoire.

Prior to the advent of modern colored belts, a Karate-Ka would wear the same belt (a white belt) during his entire training. Although the Karate uniform would be laundered  regularly, as a sign of respect, the Karate-Ka would not wash his belt. Over time, the white belt would become soiled. The belt would even be used to wipe the sweat from one’s brow after training. Thus, the belt would become discolored, eventually turning black from use, wear and tear. This is the humble birth of the all too coveted black belt.

In the final days that remain of the year 2011, we should shed our internal black belt. Our preconceptions, emotions and perhaps even thoughts have become “soiled” over time. In the first indicia of time that calls forth “2012!” let us all shed preconceptions – “internal and emotional baggage”. In the first millisecond of 2012, we should commit to don the belt of a novice and view the minutest details of the unfolding year with a pure and innocent heart and spirit. Let us all become the exalted white belt.

REMEMBER: SANCHIN can be performed by ANYBODY, ANYPLACE, ANYTIME. Here’s two short video examples: Sanchin during a Harley-Davidson Electra-glide ride amidst the scenic Arizona cotton fields. Wishing all a very Happy New Year, I remain

MERRY CHRISTMAS, 2012

18 Dec

To all my readers and subscribers, I wish to extend my sincere wishes for a joyful Holiday Season.

Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, this time of year is the one time that everyone seems to share a genuine concern for each other, It is this Holiday spirit that sustains us all throughout the remainder of the year; during those times when feelings of “I” instead of “We” pervade our thoughts and emotions.

Let us embrace the simple concept that giving is better than receiving. In doing so, we benefit not only the recipient, but also our own sense of self and self-worth.

Please accept this short (under 3 minutes) video clip made for you all as a Pre-Christmas clip – “Old Toy TrainS” by Joe Nichols LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M__4r1qAavU

TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE SECT OF SANCHIN and ALL KARATE-KA READERS:

You are cordially invited to join me in the following SANCHIN KATA TRAINING SESSIONS. Due to geographic distances, we are unable to be together; however, we can all be together in spirit. Sanchin will be performed simultaneously in various parts of the continental United States and we will be spiritually joined during the performance. Here are the details:

HOLIDAY SANCHIN PERFORMANCE:

So that we may enjoy the Holiday Season together, as a group, on December 26th, 2011 (the day after Christmas) Sanchin Kata shall be performed at 8:00 am, Eastern Standard Time. Adjust your time accordingly, so, for example, I will perform Sanchin at 6 am Mountain Time.

NEW YEAR’S DAY SANCHIN PERFORMANCE:

Many years ago, I learned from a comrade, Sensei Gil B., that many cultures celebrate not the end of the old year, but, the birth of the New Year. Since then, I have always commemorated the sunrise of the New Year with a Kata training session. In keeping with this tradition, Sanchin Kata shall be performed at 8:00 am Eastern Standard Time on January 1st, 2012. Again, adjust your time accordingly, thus my Sanchin will start at 6 am Mountain Time.

I look forward to performing Sanchin Kata with you all.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Click here for a FREE “Stand By Me with Sanchin Self-Baptism” Video Featuring the song track: Stand By Me by John Lennon.  Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3MFNsl4mWg

 My very best wishes that we may embrace this Holiday with joy and hope as we sally forth into the New Year.

I remain,
