Remembrance Sanchin Pilgrimage

14 Jul

We have all lost people in our lives. Though the primary cause of loss is usually the death of the other person, loosing someone in your life can be caused by geographic distance, the ubiquitous “we grew apart” or reasons of unhealed strife in your relationship. In our busy lives, we often neglect to reflect and remember those we lost. For this reason, I offer the within Sanchin Pilgrimage as a means of remembering those, who for one reason or another are no longer in our lives. That person may be a Sensei, student, training partner, or non-Dojo acquaintance, but, for this week’s Sanchin practice, let us remember them.

Memories Circa 1974: myself & others with Sensei Nick D'Antuono & my first trophies for kata (Gekisai) & kumite.

Memories Circa 1974: myself & others with Sensei Nick D’Antuono & my first trophies for kata (Gekisai) & kumite.

With that in mind, I submit the

Remembrance Sanchin Pilgrimage:

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

Session Parameters:

Date: The week of Monday, July 15th, 2013

Time: any quiet time during your day;

Location: any location, but, as you know, I prefer an outdoors in nature;

Salient Points:

During your Sanchin, reflect upon and remember some one that you lost in life, embrace their memory and allow them to remain in your life through this experience.

The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

This week’s featured video is an example of using Sanchin as a form of remembrance, Sanchin Memorial Tribute to Shihan Wayne Norlander, link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASAVKhh-Hhs

Sunset Sanchin Pilgrimage

2 Jun

sanchin - bazinga

As the sun sets a new day, our path for the day winds to an end. The days events will yield to a time of introspection – how was our day, did you grasp the opportunity to walk your own path to the fullest or did you squander the day?

With the above in mind, I present the

Sunset Sanchin Pilgrimage

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

Session Parameters:

Date: The week of Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Time: Sunset (do not adjust your time – notwithstanding that Sanchin will be performed at different times, the key component is that it be performed as the sun sets and symbolically);

Location: outdoors in nature and you should be facing the setting sun.

Salient Points:

  • Prior to Sanchin, reflect upon your day and inventory the opportunities that presented themselves, the ones that were grasped and the one’s that fell through your grip;
  • The word “opportunities” in this context does not mean financial or beneficial opportunities. Rather, opportunities refers to you ability to do that which you desire, for example, did you take the opportunity to tell a loved one that you love them, did you hug a family member, call a friend, watch the sunset or sunrise, did you help someone who needed help – or did you simply turn your back on all these opportunities? In essence, did you “live” your day, or did you “exist” during the day?
  • Perform Sanchin as a means of ending the opportunity that the day presented;
  • After Sanchin, think of tomorrow as a new day to grasp the opportunities that escaped you today and the new opportunities that will present themselves.
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

In closing I remain,

 HANKO Sensei John Szmitkowski

Sine Quo Non Sanchin Pilgrimage

28 Apr

“Sine Quo Non” is a phrase derived from my years (1985 to 1989) at Seton Hall University School Of Law (Newark, NJ). Sine quo non is a latin phrase that refers to “an indispensable and essential action or ingredient” or “without which (there is) nothing.”

Sine quo non provides a restatement of the importance of Sanchin. Thus, it is an excellent platform upon which to base a Sanchin Pilgrimage.

The goal of the Sine Quo Non Sanchin Pilgrimage is to acknowledge and appreciate that without the three battles of Sanchin, our lives would not be possible. The three battles of Sanchin to which I refer to are the fundamental battles set forth in my Sanchin book and DVD, to wit: breathing, bodily movement and state-of-mind. Sine quo non also refers to the advanced three battles encompassing our multi-state of existence (See Endnote # 1).

You are cordially invited to perform the

SINE QUO NON SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

Session Parameters: (Those readers that know my “Holy Trinity” of Kata, please see Endnote # 2)

Date: The week of Monday April 29th, 2013;

Time: either first activity in the morning or the last activity at the end of the day. Even better, perform Sanchin at both times;

Location: preferably an outdoor location;

Salient Points:

  • As you perform Sanchin, remember and embrace the simple fact that without the fundamental three battles (breathing, bodily movement and state-of-mind), you would not exist;
  • Without the three battles, you would not live, therefore, your life is, in fact, the synchronization of the three battles. Thus, life is Sanchin and Sanchin is life;
  • Appreciate the frailty of life during your performance and seek to embrace the beauty of life throughout your day;
  • For those that understand the advanced three battles reflected in Endnote # 1, exist in each of the three states of being throughout the day;
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

You may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

In closing, I remain, the three battles of Sanchin

1. A complete discussion of the advanced three battles of Sanchin –  the three levels, or states, of multi-existence is contained in my aforementioned book; however, for the novice, these three battles of Sanchin are the physical state, the spiritual state and the metaphysical state. For those familiar with my dissertation on maintaining and synchronizing these three states, you should incorporate same into this Sanchin Pilgrimage. For those not familiar with these states, perform the pilgrimage using the fundamental battles of breathing, bodily movement and state-of-mind.

2. For those readers that know what I call the “Holy Trinity” of kata, Sanchin, Seienchin and Spuarunpei (Pechurin), I would suggest the following performance parameters:

  • First act in the morning, with the rising sun, perform Sanchin as an ode to the physical aspect of life, namely breathing, bodily movement and state-of-mind”;
  • At mid-day, perform Seienchin as a reminder of the spiritual nature of life and the duality of same symbolized by the affect of “calm in the storm, storm in the calm”;
  • The very last act of the day, under the awe-inspiring night sky, “pray” with Suparunpei (Pechurin) as emblematic of a desire to appreciate the metaphysical aspect of life; the eternal interconnectivity we have with all that surrounds us.

Cup-Of-Tea Sanchin Pilgrimage

3 Mar

This post is a first on two fronts. One is, despite missing last week’ blog,  I’ve never before missed my self-imposed deadline for posting a blog. The second (mandated by the first) is that I’ve never posted two Sanchin pilgrimages in a row.

My work schedule of late has moved from hectic (working 5 1/2 days) to chaotic (working 6 1/2 days); even so, working is better than not working. The schedule and the press of family events has added additional constraints on my blogging. This situation has been compounded by a general ennui arising from the loss of little Chloe on Valentine’s Day. She will be missed.

Little Chloe (R.I.P.) Issho Dojo, East Rutherford, NJ. Circa 2005

Little Chloe (R.I.P.) Issho Dojo, East Rutherford, NJ. Circa 2005

This Friday, while making my afternoon cup of tea, it occurred to me that my “tea-time” routine would form the basis of a refreshing Sanchin pilgrimage.

Each afternoon, around 2:30 pm, I take a slight break to microwave a cup of green tea. I fill my cup half way with filtered water and the other half with aloe vera juice, add a teaspoon of honey and microwave it for two minutes, fifteen seconds to boil the mixture. Rather than stand around and wait, I use this “spare” time to perform either Sanchin Kata, Tensho Kata, or both, as a means of rejuvenating myself for the rest of the work day (which often ends at 7:00 pm). After the kata are finished, the water is boiled and ready for me to add green tea leaves and enjoy.

With this background, you are now ready for the

CUP-OF TEA SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

(My martial arts readers should refer to Endnote # 1)

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner. So, we will not only be performing Sanchin (or Tensho for those that learned the kata from the free video), we will also be “sharing a cup of tea or coffee.

Session Parameters:

Date: The week of Monday March 3rd, 2013

Time: whenever you are ready for an afternoon cup of tea (or coffee, if you prefer)

Location: wherever you are at the above time

Salient Points:

  • Once again, this could not be simpler – – use your afternoon coffee or tea break to FIND THE TIME FOR SANCHIN – No excuses should be tolerated – Period.
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

As always, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

In closing, I remain, looking forward to my afternoon tea,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

“Depth Of Winter” Sanchin Pilgrimage

3 Feb

Winter. The days are shorter, colder, bleaker. Even with the cold and snow, I am still able to maintain my outdoor Sanchin and kata regime. I will admit; however, that some mornings I am less than inspired to bundle up and venture out to perform kata. Yes, I am only human.

Over the years, I have collected various poems and sayings concerning winter that provide a source of inspiration. One of my favorites is,

In the depth of winter,
I discovered
that within me
lay an
invincible summer.
(Albert Camus)

I thought that the above would make a great source of inspiration for a Sanchin Pilgrimage. So, I present to you the

Depth Of Winter Sanchin Pilgrimage

snowman As a further source of inspiration, I filmed a recent Sanchin performance in the snow and combined it with several other poems & words of inspiration.

Although I emphasize that no special uniform is required to practice Sanchin, the video was filmed with me wearing my gi (karate uniform). This is because immediately prior to filming the Sanchin, I had filmed various karate kata in the snow for the Goshin-Do Karate blog, WWW.DeFeliceRyu.Com The lack of wearing the appropriate clothing or uniform is NEVER a valid excuse for not performing Sanchin.

You are now ready for the pilgrimage.

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

Session Parameters:

Date: The week of Monday February February 4th, 2013

Time: FIRST thing in the morning! Yes, get out of that warm bed and venture out into the cold, crisp air.

Location: MUST be outdoors

Salient Points:

There is one simple point, just do it and embrace the experience.

The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

In closing I remain, deciding whether I am the snowman or the real man,

“Don’t Tread On Me” Sanchin Pilgrimage

6 Jan

Now that you have used the Austerity Sanchin Pilgrimage (Link:  https://senseijohn.me/2012/11/25/austerity-sanchin-pilgrimage/  ) and started to simply your life with austerity (being financially responsible, eating healthy and in moderation, having control over your emotions and the life), the time has come to use that austere lifestyle as a means of attaining strength. In the last submission, I asked the question, “Are you ready?” (Link: https://senseijohn.me/2012/12/30/2013-are-you-ready/)

The time has come to make yourself ready! Your strength will permit you to rebuff external negative influences. Simply, put, you do not need to tolerate external abuses. Such external abuses include, but are not limited to, physical assault, spiritual depravity, mental and emotional turmoil, governmental abuses and the like. Once again, take strength in your simple lifestyle. You are far better than those that cannot shed the burdens of over-living their physical, emotional and financial abilities. They will always be a slave to their weakness.

You are now ready for part two of this multi-part Sanchin pilgrimage, the

“DON’T TREAD ON ME” SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

This pilgrimage builds upon the “Austerity Sanchin Pilgrimage. It takes advantage of the physically invigorating and mentally rejuvenating benefits of the shobu (combat) method of performing sanchin.I took the name of the pilgrimage from the motto on the Gadsden Flag.Given it’s rich history and interesting symbology, the Gadsden flag maybe used as a symbol for this pilgrimage. (See Endnote #1)

The austerity sanchin stripped you down to your basic essentials. It also served as the symbolic warning, like the rattle on the rattlesnake, to those who would seek to attack your physical (including financial), spiritual and metaphysical well-being. Personal austerity places your back against the proverbial wall, so that once you warn against attack, you can not retreat, you will engage the threat without retreat. “Don’t tread on me.”

My "Don't Tread On Me" Sanchin "uniform"

My “Don’t Tread On Me” Sanchin “uniform”

The austerity sanchin pilgrimage striped you down to the essentials that you need. Like the rattlesnake, austerity also served as a warning, not to tread on you because there is no further room to retreat (strip-down).

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

Session Parameters:

Date: The week of Monday January 7th 2013

Time: mid-day (note; however, that you are encourage to perform the “Austerity pilgrimage” at or close to sunrise each day, in addition to this pilgrimage)

Location: preferably an outdoor location

Salient Points:

  • Use the early morning (sunrise) performance of Sanchin to open yourself to the day as it unfolds;
  • Use the shobu sanchin as the rattlesnake rattling it’s tail to symbolically wan internal and external factors from impinging themselves upon your desired physical and spiritual well-being; symbolically, tell these deleterious attacks, “Don’t Tread On Me;”
  • During your performance of shobu-sanchin, perceive yourself as having “warned” against internal and external influences from depleting your well-being, having so “warned’, be prepared to “attack” or defeat any such intrusion upon your well-being;
  • Use the shobu (combat) methodology to build your inner strength and resolve as you perform Sanchin;
  • Adopt the state of mind known as “Tomaranu Kokoro” (the mind that knows no stopping) for the rest of your day. Be unstoppable physically, spiritually and metaphysically;
  • Resolve within yourself the idea that you will not tolerate any external influence from defeating your inner spirit and the manner in which you harmoniously exist within the world around you.
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

You have worked hard, do not tolerate interference from those who have not worked as hard as you who seek to diminish you so as to enhance themselves – Don’t let then tread on you!

In closing, I remain rattling my rattles,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

ENDNOTES:

1. In December 1775, “An American Guesser” (many scholars now agreed it was Benjamin Franklin) anonymously wrote to the Pennsylvania Journal:

“I observed on one of the drums belonging to the marines now raising, there was painted a Rattle-Snake, with this modest motto under it, ‘Don’t tread on me.’ This anonymous writer speculated on why a snake might be chosen as a symbol for America.

First, it occurred to him that the Rattle-Snake is found in no other quarter of the world besides America;

Second, the rattlesnake also has sharp eyes, and “may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance;

Third, she never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: she is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage;

Fourth, she never wounds ’till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.”

AUSTERITY SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

25 Nov

This Sanchin Pilgrimage will be the first of its kind; a multi-part sanchin pilgrimage. This and the next sanchin pilgrimage will build upon each other. Here is the first component inspired by current political events.

Much is in the news about the financial crisis of many countries, political austerity measures and the public’s negative reaction to these often harsh and inequitable measures imposed upon them by their government. The daily reports of governmentally imposed austerity caused me to reflect on the entire concept of austerity in general. My reflection resulted in the idea of “individual austerity” or “personal austerity” and the subsequent strength that can be garnered from such practice. In this context, austerity (fully defined in Endnote # 1) is taken to mean “plainness and simplicity of life.”

The ability to foster individual austerity and the resultant individual strength of character is but one of the direct benefits of the practice of my dynamic-philosophy of Jiriki Kata-Do and specifically Sanchin.

 THE AUSTERITY SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

My Austerity-Sanchin “uniform”

Session Parameters:

Date: The week starting Monday, November 26th, 2012, and every day of that week

Time: early morning, preferably at sunrise and preferably Sanchin should be the first, or as close to the first, act performed each day.

Location: Any location may be used; however, as is my preference, I would suggest a location outdoors in nature;

Salient Points:

  • Use Sanchin to simplify your life spiritually and mentally (get rid of “excess mental baggage) while challenging & building yourself physically
  • Each day engage in one act of simplifying your life, ideas include,
  • healthy eating (omit processed foods, do not eat fast-foods, or eat locally sourced foods),
  • financial responsibility  – trim-down your financial burdens (examples are: put a fixed amount of cash in your pocket as a self-imposed budget and purchase using only that cash and not a charge card, or, if you have unused “stuff” sitting in your garage and attic, then have a garage sale, not only will you clean house and have extra cash, you will be selling things you no longer use to some one that will make use of the product),
  • spiritually, in addition to Sanchin, give yourself a spiritual breather (such as a quiet moment outside, listening to music, and the like);
  • metaphysical awareness by spending time each day outdoors so that you appreciate not only the beauty of your natural environment, but also the manner in which you are connected to that environment; you are an integral part of nature.
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

Now you are able to take strength in your simple lifestyle. You are far better than those that cannot shed the burdens of over-living their physical, emotional and financial abilities. They will always be a slave to their weakness.

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

Here is a video you may enjoy as you build your personal austerity with sanchin this week. It is Sanchin as self-baptism at the Lower Salt River, Arizona, Link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3MFNsl4mWg

In closing, I remain strong in my austerity,

Sensei John Szmitkowski

ENDNOTES:

1. Austerity – noun ( pl. austerities )

  • sternness or severity of manner or attitude: he was noted for his austerity and his authoritarianism.
  • extreme plainness and simplicity of style or appearance: the room was decorated with a restraint bordering on austerity.
  • (austerities) conditions characterized by severity, sternness, or asceticism: a simple life of prayer and personal austerity.
  • difficult economic conditions created by government measures to reduce a budget deficit, esp. by reducing public expenditure: a period of austerity | [ as modifier ] : austerity measures.

For those of you that have purchased a Sanchin product, you may refer to the instruction letter to access the video of Sanchin in a side stance that is privately available.

Session Parameters:

Date: Monday, September 3rd  to Sunday, September 16th

Time: during your daily Sanchin performance

Location:  any location

Salient Points: As a means of preparing to learn Seienchin, perform Sanchin this week in a side stance.

SANCHIN – RES IPSA LOQUITUR

5 Aug

I have a latin phrase burned in my mind from my years as a student at Seton Hall Law School, Newark, New Jersey (1985-1989). That phrase is “Res Ipsa Loquitur.” It means “the thing speaks for itself.” Res Ipsa Loquitur was not only a legal principle I was required to earn, it was also the name of our school newspaper. As such, I was routinely exposed to it. Now, Res Ipsa Loquitur is the foundation of our latest group Sanchin Pilgrimage.

Seienchin DVD video shoot, Ringwood Manor, Ringwood, NJ, August, 2012

It is now time for the performance of Sanchin (and the benefits derived therefrom) to speak for themselves in the

Sanchin Res Ipsa Loquitur Pilgrimage

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

Session Parameters:

Date: Every day beginning Monday, July 6th and ending Sunday, July 12th;

Time: Sunset

Location:  Any location; however, I would suggest an outdoor location;

Salient Points:

  • This one is simple – perform Sanchin as above and let Sanchin (and its benefits) “speak for itself!”

Seienchin, Ringwood Manor, Ringwood, NJ – August, 2012

In closing, I remain speaking for myself,

HANKO

SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE: “Blinded-By-The-Light”

23 May

The long Memorial Day Weekend will soon be upon us. This is the weekend that traditionally heralds the start of summer; a season of “fun in the sun.” With that spirit in mind, I would suggest the following Sanchin Pilgrimage to all my Sect Of Sanchin members. This method of Sanchin practice is a favorite of mine; in fact, it IS my daily morning Sanchin practice.

Remember, the group dynamic is not fulfilled by all of us being geographically present, rather, it is fulfilled by each of us performing Sanchin in the proscribed manner.

For purposes of ascribing a name to this Sanchin Pilgrimage, I will utilize the title of a popular song from my youth; I call this Sanchin pilgrimage the

“Blinded-By-The-Light Sanchin Pilgrimage.”

Sunrise, Veteran’s Oasis Lake, Chandler, Arizona

Session Parameters:

Date: So as to celebrate the start of summer, perform Sanchin any time during the long Memorial Day weekend being mindful of the salient points below.

Location:  Any location; however, I would suggest a natural, outdoor location that best represents the concept of “summer” to you; perhaps the sea shore, the mountains, a lake, even your own backyard while waiting for your grill to heat-up for the first BBQ of summer, be creative and celebrate your individual concept of summer.

Salient Points:

  • The purpose of this pilgrimage is to accentuate the manner in which Sanchin physically and spiritually interconnects you with your external environment. As such, you should be conscious of this interconnectivity;
  • Face the sun (but do not look directly at the sun). Then close your eyes;
  • With eyes closed, perform the “Acts of preparation” (bow, meditation and ready posture); you should be aware of the warmth of the sun upon your face and body;
  • With eyes still closed, perform Sanchin; be aware of all the various external elements, including, though not limited to the warmth of the sun, the breeze, the smell and sounds of your surrounding, take all of these factors within you as you perform Sanchin. Use all your senses;
  • After completing Sanchin and while in the ready posture, open your eyes and reflect upon the sensory stimuli experienced during Sanchin; also, note your position after performing Sanchin in relation to the position you were in prior to starting Sanchin; are you still in alignment with that position, or are you out of alignment? (See Endnote # 1)
  • Perform the “Acts of conclusion” (ready posture, meditation and bow);

In closing I remain, eager to be “blinded by the light” each and every morning,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

ENDNOTES:

1. Goshin-Do Karate Sanchin, like all “modern” kata (generally kata established or modified from the ancient kata after 1940) have a unique characteristic known as “positional coincidence.” Positional coincidence means that if a kata is performed with technical accuracy, particularly as to the stances utilized in the kata, one would start and conclude a kata at exactly the same point on the ground and in alignment with the overall starting position. Prior to approximately 1940, the older versions of kata did not necessarily have the characteristic of positional coincidence. While the majority of “modern” karate kata contain the concept, the lack of positional coincidence may still be seen in the older kata of Okinawa Kobudo (ancient weapons art) and kata of Chinese Kung-Fu.

Within the context of traditional Okinawa Karate-Do one attribute of the Sanchin Kata is that, inter alia, it conditions one physically and mentally to endure pain so as to (when necessary) be able to inflict pain in the course of defending oneself. The ability of Sanchin Kata to allow one to endure physical, spiritual, and emotional pain or discomfort is exemplified in a poem concerning the water ladle utilized in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony (Cha-No-Yu).

This poem is by an anonymous author. (See Endnote # 1) The water ladle is emblematic of the hardships one is capable of enduring through regular practice of the Sanchin Kata and the state of mind called “Mushin“(See Endnote # 2). It is as follows:

The dipper that passes to and fro between
The hells of heat and cold
Has no mind of its own and
Suffers not at all.

I hope the poem inspires all to endure what they feel they cannot. There is a saying derived from the Samurai, “To bear what one perceives one cannot bear is really to bear.” In this context, endure the hardships of life, for in so enduring, the beauty of this wonderfully existence will reveal itself. Walk with certainty on your life’s path and perform the Sanchin Kata at least daily with a sincere and pure heart.

Session Parameters:

Date:  Any time during the week ending Saturday, May 12th

Time: Anytime when a either a physical, spiritual or emotional hardship is thrust upon you.

Location:  Any location.

Salient Points:

  • Whenever and wherever you feel physically, spiritually or emotionally overburdened this coming week, use this Sanchin pilgrimage as a means of accepting the burdens,  absorbing them and triumphing over them;
  • Before performing Sanchin Kata, read the above poem;
  • Perform Sanchin Kata;
  • After performing Sanchin, give yourself a quiet time period to reflect on your performance in light of the poem. You may consider, “How does Sanchin allow you to become like the tea ladle that ‘suffers not at all’?”

In closing I remain, passing through the Heaven of life’s joys and the Hell of life’s pains and sorrows, and the better person for it,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

ENDNOTES:

  1. I first read the poem referenced in this article in the following book: Furuya, Kensho, Kodo: Ancient Ways (Lessons In The Spiritual Life Of The Warrior/Martial Artist) (O’Hara Publications, Inc., 1996)   p. 155. I highly recommend this book to any martial artist. Furuya Sensei’s insights are truly thought provoking. Though I did not know him personally, I was recently saddened to learn that Furuya Sensei passed away on March 6, 2007 while teaching a class at his Aikido Center located in Los Angeles, California.

2. The Mushin state of mind is inferred in the poem by the phrase “has no mind of its own.”

THE PANTHER SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

1 Apr

Before I announce the next Sanchin Pilgrimage, some

EXCITING NEWS:

It is my honor and privilege to announce a new weblog showcasing not only Goshin-Do Karate-Do history, lineage and Kata, but also the unique insights of Shihan Thomas DeFelice, Ku-dan, Karate-Do No Hanshi.

Filled with heretofore unseen, and thus secretive, documents and archival memoranda, this weblog is a “must-view” for any Karate-Ka and particularly those with roots to the Goshin-Do/Goshin-ryu genre. To experience this distinct historical and intuitive experience, simply click the following link: WWW.DeFeliceRyu.Wordpress.Com

AND NOW, THE NEXT SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE:

At times, the drama of life is like a cage constructed to contain our spirit. The demands upon one’s time dampen our inalienable desire to walk life’s path unbounded.

During such times when the demands of life seem to envelope and contain my spirit, I re-read the poem “The Panther” by Rainer Maria Wilke and perform Sanchin Kata. In the poem, the panther, symbolizes my caged spirit and the desire to break free, if only for a moment. The performance of Sanchin Kata provides that moment of escape.

So that you may experience the effects of opening the door to the cage that imprisons your spirit, I submit to you the next Sanchin Pilgrimage –

THE PANTHER SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE:

Session Parameters:

Date: Friday, April 6th (Yes, a Friday when you are terribly tired from the work-week)

Time: Anytime when you feel your spirit caged by the drama of your life

Location:  Any location

Salient Points:

  • Prior to the scheduled session, read the poem The Panther by Rainer Maria Wilke (For your convenience, one translation of the poem is below). Consider how the drama of life forms the bars of a cage that contains your spirit and the desire to escape those bars if only for a moment. Consider also how Sanchin Kata is the “ritual dance” upon which you can make your escape from the cage;
  • On the day of the scheduled session, read the poem again prior to embarking upon your day;
  • Anytime during the day, when the drama of life imposes itself upon you and cages your spirit, again read the poem and perform Sanchin Kata;
  • At the end of the day, when all is quiet, again read the poem and perform Sanchin Kata. Consider and reflect upon the theme of the poem and the freedom of the “ritual dance’ of Sanchin;
  • You should reflect deep and well on the above;
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book, See Endnote # 2).

The Panther

His vision, from the constantly passing bars,has grown so weary that it cannot hold anything else.

It seems to him there are a thousand bars; And behind the bars, no world.

As he paces in cramped circles, over and over, the movement of his powerful soft strides Is like a ritual dance around a center in which a mighty will stands paralyzed.

Only at time, the curtain of the pupil lifts, quietly -,    An image rushes in, Rushes down through the tensed, arrested  muscles,  Plunges into the heart and is gone. (See Endnote # 1).

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to unlock the cage imposed upon your by the drama of daily life. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

In closing, I remain, an uncaged with the spirit of the Panther, courtesy of the ritual dance of Sanchin,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

SUA SPONTE SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

26 Feb

It is one of my truisms that “You are Sanchin and Sanchin is you.” You carry the treasure of Sanchin within you at all times. To enliven this truism I invite all in the Sect Of Sanchin to participate in the “Sua Sponte Sanchin Pilgrimage.

“Sua sponte” is a term derived from my years (1985 to 1989) at Seton Hall University School Of Law (Newark, NJ). Sua sponte is a latin phrase that means “On its own will.” The goal of the Sua Sponte Sanchin Pilgrimage is to have the incubating Sanchin that resides within you, effervesce and bubble to the surface, manifesting in a Sanchin performance that is of Sanchin’s own will and accord. Thus you will perform Sanchin not when you desire the performance, bur rather Sanchin will be performed when Sanchin desires such a performance. (See Endnote # 1)

In addition Sanchin will determine how it manifests itself. Sanchin may manifest itself in the traditional manner or in one of the variations contained on my Sanchin DVD, such as the aggressive Shobu-Sanchin (used to quell an aggressive or angry spirit), or the soothing Serenity Sanchin (used to enhance one’s harmony).

As always, remember that the group dynamic is not fulfilled by the group being geographically present with each other, but rather all performing Sanchin together in accord with the session parameters. (see Endnote # 2)

 SUA SPONTE SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE: Sanchin Of Its Own Will

Session Parameters:

Date: Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Time: Anytime that Sanchin desires to manifest itself

Location: Anyplace that Sanchin desires to manifest itself

Salient Points:

  • From the moment you open your eyes on the appointed date, be aware that Sanchin is within you;
  • From that moment on, remain aware of the incubating Sanchin as it warms itself within your Hara;
  • Whenever, wherever and however Sanchin expresses it’s desire to manifest itself, unleash Sanchin and perform the Kata;
  • Though it may seem that you selected the time and place that Sanchin manifests in a performance, reflect on whether you chose the performance, or Sanchin choose the performance of its own accord;
  • You should reflect deep and well on the above.
  • The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and allow Sanchin to spring forth from you sua sponte, of its own will, at anytime and anyplace. Do this as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice.

Walking with my wife & grandson, Stratton, I wonder when Sanchin will appear sua sponte

In closing, I remain, living with Sanchin and all my Kata, sua sponte,

HANKO

Sensei John Szmitkowski

ENDNOTES:

1. Admittedly, it does seem to defy logic to “schedule” a “sua sponte” sanchin session, nonetheless, the pilgrimage parameters hope to balance the opposing thoughts of spontaneity and group unification through Sanchin. Further, it is not the performer that chooses when, where and how Sanchin will be performed, rather, it is Sanchin that chooses the moment and manner that it will manifest itself.

2. I cannot help but wonder whether in the months to come, upon scheduling a future Sua Sponte Sanchin Pilgrimage, the group will, sua sponte, perform Sanchin at the exact same moment. How wonderfully magnificent would that be?

NENJUUSHIN SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE

1 Feb

Our next Sanchin Pilgrimage:

Sanchin, the remaining rituals of Jiriki Kata-Do and any Karate Kata are an exceptionally convenient means to rejuvenate the body and the spirit. Why? The answer is simple. All are treasures that remain within you each and every minute of each and every day. No matter where you may journey, you carry the treasure of Sanchin with you at all times. As such, my mantra of “Sanchin – anybody – anyplace – anytime” simply awaits your desire to perform Sanchin for the treasure to be enlivened.

Sanchin can, and should, be used during your daily routine as a means of rejuvenation, a way to make an otherwise mundane day special, or a method by which you can take a miniature vacation from the drama of your daily life. While doing so, Sanchin will refresh you physically, enliven your spirit and connect you with the surrounding world environment.

I routinely incorporate Sanchin into my daily activities and believe you would also enjoy doing so. As an example, here is a photograph taking during a ride on my Harley-Davidson Electra-glide. I desired the refreshing effects of Sanchin so I paused next to a cotton field and performed Sanchin. (There is also a video link is below)

So that you may experience the above effects of Sanchin, I have scheduled the following Sanchin Pilgrimage:

the NENJUUSHIN SANCHIN PILGRIMAGE, or the “Everyday Mind Sanchin Pilgrimage.”

Remember, the group dynamic is fulfilled not by all being physically together, but by all performing Sanchin within the session parameters on the same day.

Session Parameters:

Date: Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 – Yes! A weekday, when you are “terribly busy” at work, and otherwise enveloped in the drama of your daily life.

Time: Anytime you may need or desire to perform Sanchin on the above date.

Location:  Anyplace wherein you feel a need or desire to perform Sanchin, indoors, or outdoors.

Salient Points: Without fore-planning be prepared to perform Sanchin anytime this day. Perform the Kata when you feel you need it most to rejuvenate you physically, spiritually and metaphysically. Use your Sanchin performance to rejuvenate you, take a miniature vacation from an otherwise mundane day, or perhaps to make the day special.

The last requirement of this Sanchin Pilgrimage is to remain in an enraptured physical, spiritual and metaphysical state throughout the day by way of the concept of  “Zanshin” (the “remaining mind” which is discussed in my Sanchin DVD and Book).

Once again, you may wish to not only perform the Sanchin Pilgrimage as scheduled, but may also revisit the specific pilgrimage and perform the Sanchin described in each session as an integral part of your regular Sanchin practice. I often incorporate Sanchin into my daily routine. Here’s a few short video examples:

In closing I remain enraptured by the “Everyday Mind of Sanchin”,
